It is a production of Carlos Martín Ballester. Madrileño, born in 1974, soon found his vocation in the study of ancient discography, mainly Flemish. Thanks to his passion for this music, over the past twenty-five years he has managed to gather the largest collection of 78 rpm records and phonograph cylinders. Since 2000 he directs Carlos 78 78 Records & Cylinders, a company dedicated to the commercialization of records and recordings of all musical genres in the period from 1890 to 1960, being the largest archive of recorded music in Spain. His relationship with flamenco and discography is developed as a lecturer, producer, editor, writer, collector, etc. He directs the Carlos Martín Ballester Collection of book disks as well as the blog El Arqueólogo Musical, and is founder and president of the Flamenco Circle of Madrid.
Following the critical and public success of the first volumes of the Carlos Martín Ballester Collection, focused on Don Antonio Chacón and Manuel Torres, this third issue is dedicated to a fundamental Sevillian: Tomás Pavón. In the shadow of his sister Pastora Pavón 'La Niña de los Peines', and without developing a professional career to use, Tomás gathered an extraordinary flow of songs: tonás and trianeras seguiriyas, soleares de la Serneta and El Mellizo, granaína, fandangos ... but, above all, it gave them a special musicality and emotion, becoming a myth for later generations.
The production includes 23 songs (two of them unpublished to date), with an unknown sound quality, mainly due to the excellent state of preservation of the plates used, the result of constant tracking over the last decades. The CD is accompanied by a 336-page book extended by José María Velázquez Gaztelu with abundant photographic material, part of it unpublished, in which his figure is analyzed from four perspectives:
Carlos Martín Ballester makes a biographical tour and a study of his record work, providing dates, participants and a multitude of unknown data to date.
Ramón Soler Díaz analyzes the musical work of the Sevillian genius, his songs and styles, comparing them with the past models.
Norberto Torres Cortés focuses his work on the guitar accompaniment of Niño Ricardo, Manolo de Badajoz and Melchor de Marchena.
José Manuel Gamboa studies the reissues of his records on vinyl, as well as his influence on later artists.
