William Young proved to be one of the most important English composers in the years prior to Purcell, Jenkins and Lawes. Although he was English he spent the last years of his life in Innsbruck. Little is known about the composer and Viola da Gambist, but his collection of sonatas from 1653 was the first such collection by an Englishman. Young's music is highly varied in style and he proves to be an adaptable, versatile composer open to the developments of his times.
